OLLI @ SOU – Spring Term 2024
Breath’s Physiological Capacity in Brain Health – In-person and Online availability
This is version 2.0 from my Fall 2023 offering that was well attended and received.
This 7 week course will emphasize the impact of functional breathing on everyday functions and during sleep for supporting neuroplasticity, optimizing cognitive functions and optimizing the blood-brain connection. Practical means to harness the physiological capacity supported by direct research on the topics and exercises given. In addition, ways to measure success of a practice with direct feedback from the body and mind will be offered.
Breathing is one of the great pillars for all functions of the body-mind complex. It is becoming a hot topic in the conversations of health. However, much of the information available for people to consume is misleading and misunderstood. This leads a person to confusion, and consequences they may not be aware of. Understanding how the breath influences certain systems in the human body and mind is important to make appropriate decisions about what one chooses to practice. This course will offer that, not discrediting any practice, but giving a basis of how the body responds to different breathing practices.
I will be teaching from a perspective of capacity, not addressing conditions of health, in order for each participant to gain practical and experiential knowledge from the felt outcomes of:
1. stability – physically, physiologically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
2. sharpness/clarity – clear seeing, keen cognition, memory enhancing, seamless processing.
3. flow state – calming, meditative, contemplative, absorption in nature.
4. relaxed focus of attention – cultivating attention for better outcomes in contemplative practices.
5. restoration & resilience – body and mind functions (like cleansing of the brain during sleep).
OLLI @ SOU is an incredible community resource for everyone in the Rogue Valley and BEYOND!!!

April 16th – May 28th
11:00 – 12:30 Pacific Time

My time I offer is strictly volunteer for those that attend and to OLLI for their 30 years of adult learning opportunities.
This is an interactive and active participation course – in-person AND online – as your best learning comes from experiencing the practices and concepts I will teach, and throughout the 7 weeks have a chance to develop your own personal practice and relationship to the breath in everyday life including all activities of daily living, exercise and sleep/recovery.
The reviews I received from last fall were above expectations and easily available information to learn and integrate into one’s life with ease. Please join me and others in this powerful course to support your own health and well-being.
Sleep Matters
Recover Vital Health & Sustain Resilience
This was a free talk in cooperation with the Ashland Food Co-op Wellness Wednesdays Community Education.
Sleeping well lays down the dis-eases of the day that contribute to physical and mental health disorders. Sleeping well is less about the amount of time, a dark and cold room, or an expensive platform to lie on…..it’s actually about how you breathe during the day (BIG!!!) and how your nervous system functions (autonomic balance, eye use, excitable/irritable mind, speaking) that has the greatest impact on your sleep. Blending science, personal and clinical experience Shawn will offer how you can effectively improve your sleep, through the breath, so you can enhance your healing & healthy capacities.
Recording, gems and insights can be found here.
Educational opportunities I can offer vary in theme, and the underlying endeavor is to offer guidance from 20years of practice, and 28 years of clinical practice. My approach is an exploration into the interior of the body, interact with the physical, physiological/energetic and phenomenal orchestral dynamics that leads to learning how to access your body’s capacity to balance and heal itself, your inherent health potential. .
