What’s Running You From the Inside? (besides your mind)

June 7, 2026 by Shawn M Flot

Right now, without a single instruction from you, something is keeping you alive. It started before you were born and won’t stop until the very end — thousands of times a day, mostly beneath your notice. Your breath.

We treat it as background noise. But your breath is doing far more than moving air. Moment to moment, it’s tuning the chemistry of your blood, deciding how much oxygen actually reaches your muscles and your brain, and setting the baseline for how much energy you have left for everything else. It’s quietly running the show — the one part of you that, unlike your mind, never once stops to ask your opinion.

Here’s what surprised me after years of looking closely: how often it isn’t running well — and how much changes when it is. People come in chasing pain, fatigue, a body that won’t quite do what they ask of it. Again and again, the breath turns out to be part of the story they hadn’t thought to read.

And the interesting part isn’t that something might be off. It’s how much room opens up when you attend to it — pain with less to come back to, movement that feels trustworthy again, capacity for the things you have to do and the things you love to do.

So I’ll just leave you curious. When was the last time you actually noticed how you breathe? Not a deep breath for a photo — how it’s working, all day, at rest and under load, when life gets challenged?

There’s a wholesome dynamo running quietly inside that question.
